An open-air sculpture museum is just what's needed to encourage you to get off that sun-lounger and start walking!The museum is the whole town, which is dotted with sculptures of various types and by different artists. Stone, metal, and a mixture of the two. The Calle Guadiaro is a good place to start as its three sculptures include all three!At the top is a (deliberately) rusted metal representation of the Cross. Many of the Holy Week processions start just here in the Parroquia de Nuestra Seora del Carmen - that big pink building. Further down the pedestrian Calle Guadiaro (If you can resist stopping in one of the bars and restaurants for a drink, some tapas, or a full-blown meal) you'll see a stone statue, then finally one which is a stone head with metal.The other statues are here and there around the town, generally near an interesting point: the Plaza Blas Infante in front of the Archeological Museum, near the Bullring and Ethnographic Museum; in the Plaza de las Flores, in the Calle Real/Calle Terraza main shopping streets, along the Paseo Maritimo seafront promenade.And while you're looking for them, keep an eye out for the poetry plaques,part of the Ruta de la Poesia (Poetry Walk), and of course the giant murals - there's one right here in the Calle Guadiaro - which are part of the Ruta de los Murals (Murals Walk).Start looking!
We didn't have a map so it was a case of hit and miss if we found any of the statues. It was fun going around spotting them. Hint: most of them are not in the Old Town area, although there are some, but along the sea front or in other squares. It would have been better if we had got a map from the Tourist office and tried to make our way around ticking them off!
